As you drive along the autoroute in Germany near the Swiss border, prepare to be captivated by an architectural marvel that resembles a whimsical child’s drawing of stacked houses. The first time I saw it I did a double take. What was this place?
Fast forward a few years, I found myself standing outside this funky building being greeted by a smiling woman who was to be our trainer for the next few days. My colleague and I were on the Vitra campus for a three-day immersive training where we would be learning the ins and outs of this iconic furniture design company.
The Hamlet, being an official Vitra partner, showcases a curated collection of design classics in all our apartments from the likes of Jean Prouvé, Antonio Citterio and Charles and Ray Eames. Before this training I must admit these were just names to me. However, after exploring the fascinating stories behind these designers and witnessing Vitra’s dedication to artisanal craftsmanship, I gained a profound appreciation for the furniture that graces our apartments at the Hamlet.
One of the highlights of my time at the Vitra campus, which covers an impressive 25 hectares, was a visit to the assembly building where we observed the meticulous process of chair production. The attention to detail that was clearly seen in each step made me quickly understand why Vitra furniture lasts a lifetime.
Vitra’s commitment to sustainability is equally impressive. Now this word gets thrown around a lot, but I was very impressed with how far they have gone to make their products as sustainable as possible and are continuing to innovate to make even more earth-friendly products. Their products incorporate recycled fabrics and cushion fillings, with 97% of their suppliers based in Europe. This dedication to a greener future is also reflected throughout the campus, featuring vegetarian and vegan dining options and even beehives nestled within wildflower gardens.
By the end of my training, I left not only inspired by the beauty of design but also with a clear understanding of why the Hamlet partners with Vitra. Our values align perfectly: prioritizing quality over quantity, embracing timeless design, and fostering a family-oriented approach.
